Excellent Hotel - Center of Newport

The Viking is excellent in all aspects but normally pricey. We received a significant discount through Expedia which brought the price down into reasonable range.

Ask to see the room first.

Stayed twice at this hotel. Nice place but I would ask to see the room first. Second time they offered us an upgrade for a certain price. Beautiful room but it was right on the busiest street corner and we felt like we were traffic cops all night long. Didn’t need to pay for no sleep. They were accommodating and changed it plus credited our account for the upgrade cost.

    Could not have been better

Great hotel and I suggest going to Newport in September when the weather is good and the crowds are down. The hotel was lovely and we were able to get an upgrade for a resonable amount. The only negative was that the hotel was not near the water.

    Perfect location

We stayed 2 nights at Viking and were very impressed by hotel’s service. Location of the hotel is perfect. Pool and gym were the highligts of the hotel. Unfortunately room and beds were not that good. Breakfast on patio was a delight and staff was very professional and friendly.

    Overall stay

The hotel was amazing. The location was perfect. My only complaint was that the room was a little small. Overall, a great weekend getaway.

    Travelers tip on dining

Scardella’s was an unbelievable Italian restaurant! And reasonable too!

    Lovely hotel, great location

My husband and I spent a week at the Viking and enjoyed our stay. It’s a great location, with the Newport mansions and the harbor at walking distance. We parked the car and didn’t need to use it at all during our stay. Everything is walking distance and there’s the trolley, too. Oh, and the rooftop terrace--really sweet and with a nice view of the harbor. No better place for 4th of July fireworks, it was a perfect place to be! My only complaint is the TV reception. It wasn’t the best, and for a boutique hotel, I find this surprising. The screen kept skipping, like it had a bad cable connection. Other than that (and a 6am fire alarm--without incident, thank goodness), it’s a lovely hotel. I recommend it!

    Travelers tip on local attractions

Although you can walk to a few of the mansions from the Viking Hotel, it’s best to take the trolley, which runs often during the day/early evening.

    Old hotel, good location

This was a wonderful location in Newport and I would recommend it for that alone. We could walk nearly everywhere. It is an older hotel and the bathroom was divided with sink and closet on one side and toilet and shower on the other. The latter was the smallest space I think I’ve ever experienced at a hotel. Front desk personnel were very friendly and helpful as was housekeeping. People in the room above us weren’t abnormally noisy but we could hear every move they made.

    Not impressed

We booked a Newport room and it was really dated and tired. We paid to upgrade to another type of room and it was much nicer but bed linen seemed heavily used there was a blood stain on the duvet.... I liked the location and the facilities of teh hotel but it wasnt what I expected.....

    Nice Hotel

Every good but no frozen drinks! Boo Hoo!

    Beautiful Hotel

I really loved the archtitecture of the hotel. The staff was very attentive. It was within walking distance of shopping and restaurants. The rooms were well sized and comfortable.

    Very Nice, but Expensive

I was satisfied with the quality of service and the rooms - however everything cost extra (parking, television) and added up.

    Loved this old hotel

The hotel is in a great location, just a few blocks from the waterfront. It’s a big, old place, and very well-maintained. I loved the decor of our room, but my only complaint was the size of it. I’d selected the smallest room when booking because it was the cheapest, but I wish I’d gotten the next bigger one because it was TINY. We had drinks at the bar, which was fun. Overall, it was a good time, and we’ll definitely stay there again!

    Travelers tip on dining

Try The Mooring for dinner (and the bag of doughnuts for an app!). Brunch at The Candy Store was awesome. I had the R.I. Johnnycakes (poached eggs and smoked salmon).

Quality Hotel if had for the Right Price

My fiance and I stayed here in the Spring. The room was large but the bathroom was very small and not renovated. We were on the first floor (although numbered in the 2000’s) and I asked if we could have a more renovated room, to which I was told I could upgrade for the very low price of $30 per night...I passed and was happy with the room we initially received. The pool and gym are very nice. The restaurant/bar are nice as well...breakfast was very good and not too overpriced. I was fortunate to get a good price on the room before the summer season started. I probably would not have paid full price.

    Travelers tip on recreational activities

Go on the cliff walk....it is free and interesting. Be warned, some of the walk is actual cliffs and not simply a walking path. We saw some people with dogs and they had to carefully carry them over some of the walk.

    Good location

Nice location..away from the busy waterfront but within walking distance. Our only complaints were the bathroom in our room was incredibly small (two adults could not fit in the bathroom at the same time) and the hotel seemed a little understaffed.

    Travelers tip on dining

Scales and Shells on Thames Street was a delicious spot for dinner...however, they don’t take reservations or credit cards.

    Great Place

My boyfriend and I really enjoyed are stay at The Hotel Viking. It is within walking distance of Thames St. and all the shops in Newport. The only con is that there were many events going on the weekend that we visited and you had to walk through one of them to get to the pool which was a little awkward. The hotel resturaunt was also very busy and it took some time for service. Other than that the Hotel is very clean and comfortable and we would stay there again.

    old-fashioned service -

    - in a big, comfortable hotel with great location.

    Prime Location; Great Hotel

I took my mother on a trip to Newport this January and we really loved the hotel. The staff was absolutely wonderful, helpful with restaurant recommendations, public and other transportation and everything else. The spa was to die for; make sure you try the Milk & Honey procedure. The restaurant had amazing food and the breakfast which was included with our stay was not your average continental breakfast of toast and jams. The location was just great and allowed us to walk to just about everything we cared to see. Don’t waste your money on cabs. The bus stop is just outside of the front door and public transportation is very convenient to all the mansions and other sightseeing spots. And if you are in the mood for great Italian, go to Sardella’s which is just a few blocks away on Memorial Boulevard. I would definitely go back to this hotel again.

This is a very good hotel, great service, great amenities, but if you stay in the old part of the hotel the rooms are way too small, for two people and luggage there is hardly any room to move around. Perhaps the rooms in the newer part of the hotel are more conventional size.

    Great place!

I took my girl friend to The Hotel Viking for New Years Eve. We had an amazing night and the hotel was unbelievable. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly and we felt like royalty for the duration of our stay. my only regret is that we were only able to stay one night. The only downside to the hotel is that everything is expensive but for a special occasion, it was the perfect place. I am a big fan of he city of Newport, and this only makes me want to go back again sooner than later. I’m very much looking forward to staying in this hotel again in the future!

    Travelers tip on dining

Check out Brick Alley pub. Great food; fun environment; reasonably priced; friendly service! My favorite place to eat and go for drinks in all of Newport and that is saying a ot since the town has so many other great places to offer!

    A Newport Gem!

Accommodations are comfortable, clean and of excellent value. Highly recommend!

    The perfect holiday hotel

My entire family stayed at the Viking Hotel for Christmas this yeatr - 16 adults and children in all. The service and personnel couldn’t have been better - the facilities were great (pool, exercise room, dining room, and public rooms). The hotel was decorated in perfect New England Christmas style with life-size Nutcrackers, and Christmas trees all over. My family had a wonderful holiday at the Viking, we would recommend it and would stay here again.

The pool was large and family friendly. The dining room catered to both adults and children. The lounge was warm and inviting, altho crowded at times with revelers.

    great get-away

We wanted just one night away to relax....this was the hotel for us...beautiful, classic architecture, great service. gorgeous rooms, and fantastic food. We will defintely stay at the hotel the next time we are in Newport.

    Newport Grandeur

I stayed in a newport room and it reminded me of the grandeur of this great place.

    Travelers tip on dining

Dinner at the Cliffwalk In "Spiced pear" or Castle hill in is a delight , go early wonderful views and great cuisine

    Two weddings in one day!

My daughter and I went to the Hotel Viking for a relaxing weekend getaway. We were impressed with the facilities, particularly the indoor pool. There were two weddings going on that weekend, and the service was compromised. For example, we had to wait almost 45 minutes for the valet to retrieve our car. They should find a way to warn people when they have several large events going on at once.

    Great experience

Staff and facility were wonderful, great location. Would definitely recommend.
